[INTERVIEW] Fei's Interview with Iqiyi x Dispatch

Q. How do you feel about your first solo? Any differences to promoting as a group?
This solo has been a long term dream of mine - it's something I've always wanted to do. Of course, singing onstage as one person is very different to being onstage as a group of four. I feel like this solo has really inspired me and given me many experiences and opportunities to grow.

Q. What is the concept and genre for your new album? Why did you choose this style?
My new album is called "Fantasy" and contains three songs. The first track, the title track, is called "It's Okay, Fantasy". The second track is "Sweet Sexy Fei". J.Y Park PD* personally wrote these two songs for me. While they're both upbeat songs, their styles are different. The third song is called "One More Kiss". It's a slower, lyrical song about the feelings of heartbreak between two people who are about to separate. I wanted to show people a different Wang FeiFei through these three different songs on my album.

Q. How did your good friends support your new release?
Many of my good friends, Amber** for example, cheered me on. Amber also visited me during promotions. My friends sent messages on WeChat like "Your song is very good! I watched your MV". They cheered me on through support messages on their Weibo and Instagram as well.

Q. How did you prepare a good figure for your solo? What are your usual eating and exercise habits?
For my own selfish reasons, I actually asked J.Y Park "You don't want me to be too thin, right?" . He replied with "Of course, you should have a healthy sexy vibe", so I was like "Ahh!" because I was so happy that I wouldn't need to do too much dieting. Because he said that, I didn't go out of my way to lose any weight. But after he saw my fashion shoots he was surprised and said "Goodness! Fei, what happened?". I realised then that I needed to lose some weight after all. I usually try not to eat too much and maintain regular exercise however during that time, about a month or so, I tried to exercise just that little bit more and eat a little less. I didn't eat rice, noodles or foods made of flour and ate more vegetables instead.

Q. What's the secret to staying fit?
First of all, I think consistent exercise is a very important thing - especially from a young age. A lot of female dancers have a different amount of muscle, I believe, due to the persistent training. I don’t eat before sleeping, so no supper or anything like that. After I finish a meal I try to stay relatively active to help with digestion. I also have a scheduled time for pilates.

Q. /couldn't see the exact question but it asks about the album production process/ A lot of things happened during the production of this album. Actually "Sweet Sexy Fei" was the first song I received and also a title track candidate. I remember very clearly, J.Y Park suddenly called me like "Fei, are you asleep yet?". I'm a late sleeper so I replied that I wasn't. He said "I wrote you a song, I'll tell you the title, the song is called "Sweet Sexy Fei" - isn't it such a great name?". He was very excited. I said, "Yes, yes, that's a great name. Could I have a listen to the song?". So he played it and I thought that the song was really nice. Actually J.Y Park is very childish, naive and pure haha. He's the type that gets tricked easily. But as soon as it's work he becomes a 100% different person, incredibly strict. I cried during practically every album recording we did in the past because he is so strict and would say some harsh words. The miraculous thing about this album was that I was finished within 3 or 4 recordings so I was very surprised.

Q. Did you ask any sunbaes for advice before your solo?
I learnt the most from J.Y Park because he was the one who wrote the song for me. I didn't really ask anyone in particular for advice because I think that the most important thing is first-hand experience and self-monitoring. Of course a sunbae might give you tips if you ask for performance advice however I think it's most important to know what you lack yourself. So I often recorded myself singing and dancing during practice and played back the tape carefully. I think that's very important.

Q. Is there any particular musical style you want to try?
Although I haven't composed a song before, I really want to have a song that I can sing at someone's wedding. It's always been a dream of mine (laughs). I'd like to have a really sweet song full of blessing and joy that I can sing at a wedding.

Q. Which singers or entertainers would you like to collaborate with?
I watched all the seasons of "I am a Singer", although not every episode. I saw many excellent singers such as Jie Ge (?) and G.E.M, many really great singers. If there is a chance, I would love to collaborate with any of them.

Q. What do you for rest? If you had a vacation right now what would you do?
If I was on vacation I would fly away right now (laughs). I really want to go on holiday because I've probably only had one proper holiday in all these years. Every other time has been a quick holiday following a work schedule - such as staying two or three days more. I'd really love to be able have a long vacation and go overseas.

Q. What Chinese dish has the great-cook-Fei been making recently?
I recently learnt how to cook a really great dish from my mother. She discovered our family really likes to use the rice cooker to make dishes. The dish is called "rice-cooker salt baked chicken". It's very tasty, really good. I made it for my friends. The chicken is quite large so I'll usually invite my friends over and make it for them.

Q. Would you like to participate in more movies and dramas?
What themes/genres would you like to challenge? It's not because I've had enough of being a singer, but I would like to have more opportunities to develop my acting too. I'd like to try filming a martial arts/action film. The type where you have to fly around. I've heard it's very tiring (laughs).

Q. What would you like to say to your fans?
Thank you to all my fans, thank you for cheering me on and giving me support for all these years. All your fan support and letters I have read, all your gifts I have received - thank you. I know that you have also worked very very very very hard to support me for my solo this time - thank you! I love you!
